IDC Canada Releases 10 New Forecasts for Canadian ICT Market: Shift to 3rd Platform Creates Opportunities and Risks for Tech Vendors and Service Providers

- June 3, 2015 -

International Data Corporation (IDC) announced today the release of 10 new forecast reports for the Canadian information and communications technology (ICT) market from multiple research subscription services. Key findings from the forecast reports include:

  • The Canadian enterprise applications market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period. The fastest-growing sub-market is the collaborative applications category, with a CAGR of 10.4% during the forecast period
  • The Canadian application outsourcing services market projects a market value of approximately C$2.5 billion for 2015, producing a five-year CAGR of 2.5%.
  • At the end of the forecast period in 2019, spending by Canadian end users on IT professional services is projected to reach approximately C$8.7 billion. This C$1.1 billion spending increase over a five-year period will produce a CAGR of 2.7%.
  • IDC Canada expects the Canadian consumer wireless, internet, and phone services market to increase at a five-year CAGR of 2.6%, increasing from a total market revenue of C$22.0 billion in 2014 to C$25.1 billion in 2019. Internet services revenue is expected to grow at a five-year CAGR of 6.5%, followed by wireless service at a five-year CAGR of 3.1%.
  • As virtualization and cloud computing become more pervasive, the Canadian server market is forecast to decline by an average of 0.7% per year for the 2014-2019 period.
  • 2015 will see disk storage systems revenue growth remain modest, growing 2.8% in Canada to C$782.1 million. Large organizations with 1,000+ employees represented more than 39% of all storage systems spending in the Canadian market during 2014.
  • The Canadian networking equipment market in Canada is forecast to hit $2.7 billion in revenue for 2019, underscoring the demand for secure wireless data communications, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 4.1%.
  • Stunningly sophisticated mobile devices, larger screen sizes, and 2-in-1 form factors will drive the overall 2.8% CAGR for mobile phones and tablets in Canada.
  • The Canadian infrastructure outsourcing market, which encompasses discrete hosting, network and desktop outsourcing services (NDOS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and multitower transactions, will grow by 4.1% in 2015. The largest segment will remain large-scale, multitower (infrastructure systems outsourcing [ISO]) outsourcing, which currently represents roughly 60% of third-party infrastructure operations spend.
  • The consumer segment remains a major opportunity in the Canadian telecom market fueled by IPTV growth and continued evolution to wireless, and will still account for more than one-half (or 51.4 per cent) of the telecom market in 2019.

"Canadian specific forecasts help our clients understand the unique trends in the market, identify pockets of growth and better target addressable opportunities to meet customer demand" says Tony Olvet, Group VP, Research at IDC Canada. "The appetite for cloud, mobile technologies and the rapid growth of data and digital content continues unabated in the Canadian market. Third platform technologies are reshaping the market outlook for Canadian suppliers of information and communications technologies (ICT)" he says. "Some vendors are already succeeding in the 3rd platform era, while others are struggling to meet the rapidly shifting technology requirements of Canadian businesses and consumers."
