PRESS RELEASE

"IDC PROVIDES SNAPSHOT OF CANADIAN ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD (EMR) MARKET"

- Jan 28, 2010 -

NEWS FACTS

  • The Canadian EMR market is still fragmented and at an immature stage, despite numerous programs and funding from provincial and federal governments to drive mass adoption of EMR and EHR
  • According to Canada Health Infoway, EMR adoption moved from early adopters to the early majority stage from 2004 to 2009 yet over 75% of Doctors, are still resistant to replace their old paper-based systems with an EMR system.
  • With an abundance of vendors and fierce competition- Canadian EMR companies create survival strategies to withstand the unique requirements of each province including:
    • Acquisitions and mergers: Larger players, with more financial power, are merging with or acquiring the solutions of smaller vendors.
    • Cross-selling: establishing partnerships with other players in the market and selling their solutions
    • Targeting the U.S. market: due to the larger government funding to EMR systems as well as national certification process (as opposed to Canada's province by province approach)
  • A total of eight companies are profiled in the study: CLINICARE , EMIS, Healthscreen, Jonoke, Nightingale, Practice Solutions , Wolf Medical, and xwave . The companies were selected based on their ability to maintain, or achieve, a pan-Canadian presence in the market.

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO ALISON BROOKS, RESEARCH DIRECTOR PUBLIC SECTOR, IDC CANADA

  • Establishing and maintaining a national presence in the market is exceptionally costly as provincial certification requires significant R&D investment.
  • Privacy and security issues are key pain points in the operation of health systems; the ease of use and affordability of ASP EMRs makes these solutions a strong candidate to replace on-premise solutions in the long run.
