IDC Multicloud

What is necessary to successfully run a cloud-based digital platform?

DIGITAL CONNECTIONS | Poland | March 25, 2021

Overview

Digital infrastructure and platforms are the foundation for resilient business and competitive advantage in today’s digital economy. The pandemic has illuminated how digital leaders were far better equipped to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, ensure operational resiliency, and build new business value.

Cloud has become necessary to create digital infrastructure platform. As companies are moving enterprise applications to the cloud and integrating them with new cloud-native solutions, IT organizations need to handle them in complex multicloud environments. Seamless integration of various envirronments becomes crucial for multicloud success.

Typical challenges that arise include deciding which workload should be placed in which cloud, what the criteria are for deciding workload placement, how to govern cloud usage and ensure regulatory compliance, how to integrate various clouds and gain visibility into the performance of cloud services, and how to secure enterprise applications and cloud native applications.

To deal with these challenges successfully, organizations should look select the right cloud providers, cloud operating model, and target architecture, but also plan the development of skills and the cultural change that follow the change in technology platform.

IDC's Multicloud will present latest industry trends and forecast. Our guests will show the ways companies move from islands of innovation to cloud-based operating models at scale and drive business transformation.

Key Topics

Platform choice

Various workloads require various platforms to run on. IT managers must determine where customization and long-term cloud commitment is necessary and where applications require standard and easy to leave cloud platforms. Combination of platforms ranging from core to cloud to edge require smart decisions on integration tools.

Workload and Data Migration Scenarios

The right cloud platform for each business-critical application can be on-premise, in the private or public cloud or at the edge. Migrating application and data in an efficient and safe way is a key to success.

Multicloud Management and Automation

The operational complexity of a multicloud environment is high. IT managers need to invest in cloud management tools and processes to automate and operate at scale. The use of machine learning may be necessary.

Cloud Governance

The traditional governance models used on-premise are too rigid for the agile multicloud world. It is necessary to set a new, cloud governance model that links cloud operations with business objectives to enable innovation.

Cloud Integration

Companies build hybrid environments combining own data center resources, various types of third-party data center services, different clouds and even edge location to create flexible digital platform. Combination of environments require smart decisions on integration tools and expertise on how to run and manage it in a most efficient and secure way.

Going to the Cloud. Why do I need Integration?

Rafał Jaworski

Chief Solutions Architect, Software AG Polska

Rather, I would say: I'm going to the cloud, so I'm starting the Integration adventure in earnest. What for? After all, in the Cloud everything is easier. Not really. The environment is more complicated - it consists of applications transferred to the cloud, or built there, SaaS applications available only through the API - on the terms specified by the provider and still in some part from on-premise components. You can clearly see that there are more dependencies and not everything can be decided by myself. What remains the same is the importance of Integration - as before, the quality of Integration will determine how smoothly I will be able to make changes, or even migrate to another cloud, all or part of the solution. When starting the process of moving to the Cloud, I need to answer a number of questions, such as

  • what criteria to consider when designing the Integration?
  • Whether to use integration tools or code?
  • If tools, which ones?
  • What have I not foreseen in my plan?

During the presentation I will try to introduce these issues, as well as offer answers to these and other questions.

How to control data in multicloud environments and how to effectively use its value?

Robert Nowak

Senior Sales Engineer, Splunk

The growing use of the multicloud model seems to have benefits of its own, such as:

  • performance optimization,
  • cost reduction,
  • flexibility.

But is multicloud just about the benefits? Of course not. Challenges such as the emergence of new competency silos in organizations, increasing metrics such as MTTR, or issues related to data oversight or compliance are just a few.

At the meeting, I'll show how the Splunk platform can help address these and other challenges associated with implementing multicloud initiatives in enterprises, in terms of cyber security, infrastructure monitoring or applications.
