Chief Digital Officers: Bridging the Innovation Gap Between the CIO and CMO

This IDC study examines the emerging role of the chief digital officer (CDO). Companies that participated in this study include Caterpillar, CVS, Meredith Corp., SAP Digital, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Travelex, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"Digital transformation is now seen as essential to future revenue growth at every organization we interviewed and CDOs are emerging to lead the effort," said Gerry Murray, research manager, IDC CMO Advisory. "CDOs are being hired to modernize and transform organizations. Companies have to move at a much faster pace than ever before. They cannot rely on the organizational muscle memory to perform 'better, faster, cheaper.' They have to be inventive. They have to be willing to literally tear down the walls and provide the context for new ways of working, new modes of communication, and a new cadence for innovation."
