Services Innovation: Spending Metrics — U.S. IT Spending by Industry Sector, 2015

Authors: Suya Xiong, Eileen Smith
Abstract

This IDC study provides a data-driven overview of the current trends in IT spending. It is intended to assist CIOs, IT executives, and line-of-business technology professionals in identifying high-level spending trends and making informed budgeting decisions. This study provides organizations with key spending metrics to help them plan their IT budget and align IT spending with their key business goals. It focuses specifically on three spending metric categories: IT spending as a percentage of revenue, capital expenditure (capex) and operating expenditure (opex) as percentage of total technology expenditure, and internal and external IT spend as percentage of total technology expenditure. It also analyzes external IT spending distribution across key technology groupings (i.e., hardware, software, IT services, and telecommunication services).

"With the increasing complexity of the business IT landscape, IT executives find the need to transform their IT budget processes to focus on return on investment and foster innovation," says Suya Xiong, senior research analyst with IDC's IT Executive Program. "Analyzing the IT spending trends at the industry sector level lays foundation for organizations of all sizes to evaluate their IT budgeting processes and maximize the business value of IT."
