This IDC study describes IDC's Cloud MaturityScape. This IDC Cloud MaturityScape is for organizations that are interested in understanding how they can take the necessary actions to move forward successfully with cloud computing. The purpose of this IDC MaturityScape is to assist senior IT leaders — C-level officers, solutions architects, and leaders in development, operations, networking, and storage organizations of midsize and larger organizations — in defining their business goals as they develop their cloud transition strategy by assessing the current state of their cloud service and technology deployment. It particularly focuses on:

  • Business understanding of cloud service use
  • IT operational capability used to deliver cloud-based service delivery models
  • Support processes, governance models, technologies, and skills
  • Identifying gaps in overall cloud management capabilities based on the aforementioned criteria — or more broadly: vision, technology, people, and process

"This study creates a road map for better aligning an organization's business requirements and tools with the emerging needs of complex, dynamic IT environments. This document identifies five maturity stages for cloud service and technology adoption and deployment, based on a set of specific vision, technology, people, and process dimensions and outcomes. The document also provides actionable guidance to senior IT decision makers and line-of-business (LOB) stakeholders who are tasked with ensuring that their organization is effectively embracing cloud-based innovation and an actionable measurement system for a company's cloud transition strategy." — Robert Mahowald, program vice president, Cloud Software
