IDC Perspective: The Future of Commerce

IDC defines the Future of Commerce as the application of 3rd Platform technologies and innovation accelerators (IAs) such as Big Data, IoT, AR/VR to fundamentally change the way commerce is done between individuals, organizations, and things, and deliver outcome-based products and/or services through business model innovation. Today, we can already observe the disruptive impacts of digitally enabled business models across industries, and we expect these to intensify and extend over time.

This report looks at the Future of Commerce by examining its evolutions following three chronological stages — the past, the present, and the future. Through these stages, we examine the following questions:

  • How have business models and their value propositions evolved, and will evolve, from the previous stage?
  • How have consumer life activities and experiences been, and will continue to be, transformed by business model innovation?
