5G Network Transformation: Realizing 5G New Radio in Asia/Pacific

In this paper we review the current progress of 5G New Radio standardization, candidate spectrum bands, and trials and tests being conducted in Asia/Pacific. Regulators are expected to either allocate or conduct spectrum auctions for both the 3.5–4.8GHz and 24–28GHz bands. 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) has emerged as a dark horse solution and is expected to go live by end of 1H19 in a number of countries in Asia/Pacific. By 2022, 5G FWA and mobile networks will proliferate across the region.

"5G consumer services will drive much of the initial investment in 5G across Asia/Pacific but by 2022, enterprise-grade low-latency and mission-critical services will become an important new source of revenue for CSPs in Asia/Pacific as 5G is combined with IoT and AI/deep learning technologies in transportation, retail, government/smart cities, and agriculture and resources," says Bill Rojas, IDC Adjunct Research Director, Telecommunications. "The combination of 5G, IoT, and AI will generate new opportunities for content providers, software, cloud providers, NEPs, and IoT device/sensor/module makers," he ends.
