Abstract

This study analyzes the network equipment spending (capex) and total CAPEX in the region in both fixed-line and mobile networks. Mobile network spending represents roughly 76–91% of the total network equipment spending in the region as the number of LTE cell sites (macro and small) in the PRC approaches 500 people (using total population) per cell site in 2017–2018, similar to the levels in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

"The proliferation of midtier smartphones, combined with extensive broadband (wireline and mobile infrastructure) coverage of households and the population (respectively) in the region, is driving the next generation of mobile broadband networking and overall DX of cities in the region. When combined with the high household broadband penetration, particularly, fiber to the home (FTTH), in the region, the stage is set for 5G to impact not only consumer but also vertical industries after 2020," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific.
