The automotive and semiconductor industries have invested in 801.11p/DSRC for V2X. Leading regulators appear ready to make DSRC a mandatory requirement with automakers. Nevertheless, the cellular industry, led by the 3GPP, has made extensions to Rel-14 and Rel-15 to prepare 5G New Radio to support V2X services.
"Although DSRC is a mature technology that has been extensively tested, the total costs of V2I infrastructure could propel 5G-V2X to the forefront by 2021. This depends on whether it can be shown through network slicing and innovative frequency management that 5G-V2X can leverage the economies of scale arising from the 5G capital investment expected by 2021," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific.
