Authors: Shaily Shah, Hugh Ujhazy

Abstract

This IDC Perspective caters to technology leaders who are finding their value propositions in the smart buildings ecosystem. This report also highlights the vendor solutions adopted and gives recommendations and examples of future smart offerings for buildings in areas of smart elevators, smart lighting, and smart grids and meters. This study offers a deep dive into opportunities leveraged and challenges managed while deploying smart building solutions.

Smart buildings of the future will leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) for improving building and equipment maintenance, increasing efficiencies in business operations, complying with new regulations and codes, attracting and retaining tenants and employees, and achieving sustainability and corporate social responsibility goals.

"The value of a smart building is realized by its ability to optimize, integrate, and communicate. IoT is the key enabler in bringing together valuable activity insights from different systems while optimizing resource consumption and driving energy and cost savings," says Shaily Shah, research manager, Internet of Things, IDC Asia/Pacific.
