Carrier Implications from the Intelligent Edge

By: Bill RojasAdjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Hugh UjhazyVice President, IoT and Telecommunications

Abstract

The "edge" represents a new frontier in the convergence of infrastructure domains such as compute, storage, and networking (more specifically, in moving compute to where the data is created) to dramatically reduce time to value. The edge is not a singular entity nor the name of a singular market, but rather a way of recasting infrastructure boundaries beyond the datacenter depending on the use case, industry, or business function. The global commercialization of 5G mobile services is going to accelerate the demand and construction of edge compute infrastructure.

"Telcos will play a central role in building and managing the edge infrastructure but they will not be the only companies looking to capitalize on the need for edge compute resources, " said Hugh Ujhazy, vice president of Telco and IoT, IDC Asia/Pacific. "The business models around the edge are yet to emerge but the importance of the edge to the OTT players is not lost on them, and we expect to see various ecosystems evolve around edge computing," he added.
