5G Connectivity Framework for the Digital Transformation Industrial Enterprise
By: Bill Rojas Adjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Emilie Ditton AVP, Energy Insights and Manufacturing Insights, Hugh Ujhazy Vice President, IoT and Telecommunications
Abstract
Manufacturing is working toward its vision of Industry 4.0. At the same time, the next generation of cellular technology, 5G New Radio (NR), is poised to play an important and strategic role in realizing Industry 4.0. Factory automation, process control, and logistics will all benefit from 5G in the factory by taking advantage of 5G's low-latency and high-reliability capabilities slated for Rel-16 and Rel-17. Industrial enterprises, including resources and utilities companies, will use 5G NR as building blocks for the evolution of digital operations/production platforms. "It will take the industry three to five years to fully realize the potential of 5G NR in manufacturing and resources, but the potential opportunities and benefits are too large for the industry to ignore," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific.
