Asia/Pacific 5G Spectrum and Deployment Update

By: Bill RojasAdjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Hugh UjhazyVice President, IoT and Telecommunications

Abstract

Commercial 5G services, starting with South Korea in April 2019, are expected to be launched between 2019–1H21 across Japan, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Hong Kong, and Australia. "Each market will be dealing with different mix of bands and technical challenges, but it does appear at this stage that mmWave will play an important role in capacity, small cells, and to a lesser extent mobility services," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Each market will develop 5G consumer and enterprise use cases tailored for local markets, but IDC believes that consumer virtual reality will not go mainstream until post 2022, but high-resolution video services will emerge rapidly once adequate coverage and capacity are built out," adds Bill Rojas.
