The Explosion in Remote Work Is SD-WAN's Opportunity to Help End Users Directly and at Scale

By: Pushkaraksh ShanbhagSr. Research Manager

Abstract

Since the global onset of the COVID-19 outbreak remote work has become an official mandate in several geographies where there are movement restrictions in place, and enterprises have been scrambling to get their employees access to remote work technologies to stay even minimally operational. But even after getting employees access to remote work technologies virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), videoconferencing, and collaboration tools, among others several challenges to efficient remote work remain. IDC believes SD-WAN technology can be adapted to significantly help in the current extended and scaled remote work environment by extending the acknowledged benefits of the technology to the remote worker on the edge (no pun intended). Networking solution and services vendors need to quickly develop reference architectures for SD-WAN-enabled remote connectivity at scale (the branch is now every individual's home office), and proactively communicate the value proposition of such deployments to enterprises struggling to stay operational in these tough times.
