Abstract

This Tech Buyer Presentation provides an analysis of industrial internet of things (IoT) and edge computing for mining and oil and gas companies. Industrial IoT and edge computing are critical components of the technology strategies that companies need to have in place. This report draws on IDC's research and engagement with mining and oil and gas companies and results from IDC's 2018 IT/Operational Technology (OT) Convergence and OT Security Survey conducted in May 2018 across mining, oil and gas, utilities, and manufacturing.

"If mining and oil and gas companies are to realise the promised value from digital operations associated with delivering production optimisation, asset performance management and maintenance operations, effective implementation of industrial IoT, and edge computing are critical," says Emilie Ditton, Associate VP, Energy and Manufacturing Insights, IDC Asia/Pacific. "For the large proportion of resources operations with remote operations, edge computing is particularly important because of its ability to conserve bandwidth in connectivity-restricted environments and enable decision making at the device/equipment with greater autonomy and time-sensitive basis. This means companies can far better support decision making, which improves safety and delivers production optimisation in real time across an integrated operation," she adds.
