IDC Manufacturing Insights: Industry 4.0 — DX Use Cases and Horizons

By: Stephanie KrishnanResearch Director, Christopher HolmesManaging Director - IDC Insights Asia Pacific

On-line Presentation

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation takes the manufacturing, mining, and utilities use case taxonomies for digital transformation and transposes them into three-horizon road maps aligning with three key drivers for Industry 4.0 in industrial organizations: performance, condition, and customer engagement, underpinned by an environment of extreme efficiency and innovation enablement.

Industry 4.0 is most simply described as the technology-led business transformation of industrial operations, including factories, oil & gas platforms/wells, mining sites, electricity grids, and generation plants. Industry 4.0 delivers digital innovation through autonomous, data-rich, and insights-based operations to improve production performance, seeking the optimal condition of people, products, and processes.

As an organizing principle for our digital transformation research, IDC has created DX use case taxonomies for multiple industry segments. These horizon maps draw from the taxonomy and use cases of IDC's four manufacturing value chains, in addition to utilities and mining, to provide a full landscape of potential use cases for industrial organizational digital transformation.

These horizon maps follow a hierarchical structure that allows organizations to:

  • Determine the predominant driver for their transformation
  • Identify the strategic priorities that will support the transformation
  • Select programs that will align with the strategic priorities
  • Identify the use cases that will form the basis for funded projects

These horizons, when combined with the relevant taxonomies, provide the framework for digital journey maps that will assist our clients in planning the full scope of their enterprise efforts.

According to Stephanie Krishnan, IDC's Research Director, Manufacturing Insights, "Industrial organizations are determining that an Industry 4.0 digital journey is not just a technology strategy. Delivering outcomes requires an integrated strategy, which begins with understanding the primary drivers. Organizations can then define the mission, strategic priorities, and programs so that individual projects or use cases support the overall business strategy."
