This IDC presentation provides an overview of the India communications industry, describing general market trends, the players' financial position, operational key performance indicators (KPIs), and essential technology focus areas for them. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and national lockdown, these communication SPs (comm. SPs) are increasingly considered as utilities for most consumers and businesses. However, this also brings in numerous complexities, challenges, and opportunities still unseen in India's context.
"The consolidation in the communications sector in the past decade has already separated wheat from the chaff because of Reliance Jio's predatory pricing, regulations, and industry shifts. However, all major comm. SPs are still under the same regulatory umbrella. Hence, focusing on consistent quality of service (QoS) with lower cost of operations — by finding niches throughout rural/urban clusters and retail/enterprise needs — is the need of the hour for comm. SPs to find a proper balance of affordability, strategic intent, and business continuity with a long-term focus in India," says Yash Jethani, research manager, Telco and Internet of Things (IoT) Insights, IDC Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) (APEJ).
