COVID-19: Should A/NZ Businesses Encourage the Adoption of Contact Tracing Apps in the Workplace?

By: Monica CollierSenior Research Manager, Telecommunications

Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the effectiveness of contract tracing and the technology — contract tracing apps — supporting government efforts to contain COVID-19. Focusing on the New Zealand and Australian environments the report suggests businesses could get value out of encouraging employees to use the national contact tracing app, so long as employers have done due diligence around privacy matters and other adoption inhibitors.

"Under many circumstances, the government and industry would be commended for rapidly developing new digital solutions in response to a crisis", says IDC Australia/New Zealand Senior Research Manager, Monica Collier. "Here, we are dealing with our citizens' private information, that could have materially negative consequences in the wrong hands. Despite the need for digital contact tracing solutions right now, both organisations and individuals must temper take a considered view from a data privacy and security perspective before encouraging or mandating app use to manage contact tracing in the workplace," she adds.
