How Do Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Enterprises Monitor and Measure Power Consumption in Their Captive Datacenters?

By: Glen DuncanAssociate Research Director

Abstract

The future enterprise will make critical decisions based on key infrastructure metrics linked to optimization, resilience, and ongoing enhancement. Large service provider datacenter operators, using modern technology and design practices, strive to reduce their power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratio down to 1.0 or as near as possible, usually at a range of 1.2–1.4. Enterprises currently spend about 11% of their total annual operating budget for their datacenters on utility bills. However, the measurement of power consumption is still fragmented between a mix of software- and hardware-based controls, and enterprises will benefit from further integration through datacenter infrastructure management into a single pane of glass. This IDC Survey Spotlight is based on a study of 376 Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APEJ)–based enterprises from IDC's 2020 APEJ Datacenter Operational Survey. The survey was carried out to better understand the attitudes and behaviors of technology buyers toward datacenter infrastructure-related technologies.
