Building Secure Endpoints and Edge Nodes for Industrial Internet of Things

By: Bill RojasAdjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Hugh UjhazyVice President, IoT and Telecommunications

Abstract

Realizing a chain of trust across all legacy network elements, such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), is a monumental task for industrial companies. However, as these companies gradually embark on IT/OT integration, this is a task that cannot be ignored. Given this task, this IDC Perspective investigates how OT companies can build secure endpoints and gateways as well as provide high-integrity connectivity to cloud compute resources. "Large industrial companies possibly have tens of manufacturing sites, thousands of connected machines and SCADA, and hundreds of thousands of sensors, which imply that chain of trust must begin with the endpoints themselves," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Ensuring that the integrity edge storage and compute as well as cloud storage and compute is secured is also a vital link in the chain of trust," he adds.
