India’s Mobile Market Update: India Is Not Ready for 5G

By: Shiv Putcha, Yash Jethani

Abstract

India has been late in 5G commercial deployments compared with other markets in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APEJ) and has not been able to conduct an auction for 5G spectrum. Despite identifying the 3.5GHz spectrum band for 5G, extremely high reserve prices have ruined the business case. Aside from spectrum availability and allocation, there are many pending issues surrounding the policy framework for digital infrastructure that will enable 5G rollouts. "India’s communications service providers (CSPs) have been proactive in trying to find solutions to change their network economics in preparation for 5G," says Shiv Putcha, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already promised to use Open Radio Access Network (ORAN)–compliant, homegrown gear for their 5G deployments, thereby opening up potential opportunities for new players," he adds.
