Abstract

This study analyzes the network equipment spending and total CAPEX in the region in both fixed-line and mobile networks.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the work-from-home and online schooling policies reinforced the critical role of the telecom industry, particularly broadband fixed internet services. The leading communications service providers (CSPs) in the region have operated as essential enterprises during the pandemic, which led to accelerated transformation projects involving mobile core, RAN access and fiberization, optical transport network capacity upgrades, and software-defined networking (SDN).

Three quarters of the markets in the region have already issued midband 5G spectrum, and over half have issued millimeter wave (mmWave) 26/28GHz spectrum, which has incentivized MNOs to build 5G networks that will coexist with 4G and even offload 4G traffic in very congested places and converge fixed-line IP traffic and mobile IP traffic.

"In the next five years, enterprise 5G, multiaccess edge (MEC) computing, 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), and low earth orbit (LEO) satellites services will play important roles in bringing low-latency, high-bandwidth services to all industries and regions in each APEJC market, driving further innovation and digital transformation," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific.
