IDC Survey Spotlight: How Are Emerging Technologies Transforming Remote Operations?

By: Rakesh PatniAssociate Research Director

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight, based on the IDC Future of Operations Survey, June 2021, highlights how energy companies in Asia/Pacific will make remote monitoring of operations a central focus over the next three years. The digitalization of remote operations will require new technologies such as cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), and edge/industrial internet of things (IIoT) sensors and will be focused on three priority areas: inspection and maintenance; health and safety; and audit and quality procedures. There are several use cases from connected safety wear to virtual reality simulations for training purposes. This survey spotlight offers insight into these priorities and use cases and why energy companies should look to invest now to reap long-term benefits.

"The digitalization of front-line operations offers a unique opportunity to energy companies in Asia/Pacific to optimize their inspection, maintenance, audit, and health and safety processes. Strategic investments in cloud, edge/IIoT, AI, and networking capabilities will offer long-term benefits ranging from reduced operating costs and downtime, to better outcomes for operational efficiencies, regulatory compliance, and perhaps most critically, for the health and safety of the workforce," said Rakesh Patni, associate research director, Energy Insights, Asia/Pacific
