Abstract

This IDC study looks at the role of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in the development of railway communications infrastructure (RCI). Railway communications infrastructure has been deploying IIoT for over 15 years by utilizing multiple location determination, sensing, and wireless technologies. Global System for Mobile Railway (GSM-R) has been the workhorse of the data and voice communications services in RCI but as the system ages the industry is looking to 5G to modernize voice and data communications in RCI. IIoT solutions must provide high reliability, predictable latencies, and suitable bandwidth for different use cases.
