Abstract

This IDC study looks at advanced fiber-based and Light and Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)–based route monitoring technologies used in railway operations. Railway communications infrastructure has been deploying industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for over 15 years by utilizing multiple location determination, sensing, and wireless technologies. GSM-R has been the workhorse of the data and voice communications services in railway communications infrastructure (RCI) but as the system ages the industry is looking to 5G to modernize voice and data communications in RCI. IIoT solutions must provide high reliability, predictable latencies, and suitable bandwidth for different use cases.
