The Role of the Future Railway Mobile Communications System in Managing Railway Transport Networks in Asia/Pacific

By: Bill RojasAdjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, Hugh UjhazyVice President, IoT and Telecommunications

Abstract

The Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS) is being developed as a replacement for the GSM for railway (GSM-R) by 2030. The leading adopter of GSM-R in Asia/Pacific is the People's Republic of China (PRC). IDC expects Northeast Asia and India to adopt many of the features planned for the FRMCS. As the FRMCS specifications start to incorporate 5G, the role of 5G, sub-6 GHz, and mmWave will expand in onboard train systems, train stations, tunnels, viaducts, and other rail infrastructures to deliver high-quality intelligent video and real-time and near-real-time data that can be used for safety management and safety and control. Onboard video broadcasting for train operations, passenger information systems, and advertising will become part of the basic services to be offered. VoIP systems will be integrated with onboard internet connectivity, closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, and passenger information systems (PIS).
