On-line Presentation
Abstract

This IDC Survey presents results of IDC's Q4 2015 survey of US SMBs with a focus on current use and future acquisition plans for servers. The share of small and midsize firms with servers is provided with company size detail (SBs with <5, 5-9. 10-19, 20-49, and 50-99 employees; MBs with 100-259, 250-499, and 500-999 employees.) Server use by form factor is presented for desktop, tower, rack mounted, server blade, and hyperconverged servers. SB and MB server acquisition plans are compared for first time network users, firms moving from peer-to-peer to server based networks, and those planning to acquire additional or replacement servers. Current and future server brand preferences are presented with a specific focus on Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo, and Cisco.

The share of SMBs using virtualization is presented with company size detail, with the mean number of virtual servers per physical server also provided in detail. Hypervisor preferences are compared for total SBs and MBs, with detail on firms with 50-99 employees provided. The share of total servers that are virtualized is examined in similar detail, showing the extent to which virtualization is still a work in progress or firms prefer to keep some workloads on dedicated servers.
