This IDC Survey identifies current AI adoption drivers and gaps between perception and market reality. IDC Canada's research team fielded AI-related survey questions to obtain basic market data on Canadian AI perception and adoption. Three key themes emerged:

  • There is a significant gap in BDMs' versus ITDMs' perception of the current strategic value of AI; ITDMs see AI benefits as being more operationally oriented than BDMs.
  • The amount of strategic business planning supporting AI initiatives trails the level of BDM belief that it is a source of strategic competitive advantage — indicating AI implementation is more operational than strategic in nature.
  • Key AI benefit areas for organizations that have implemented it are operational in nature, centering on process/workflow efficiency rather than strategic competitive advantage.

The key takeaway for vendors is addressing vertical/industry-specific business process/workflow efficiency, which is critical for selling AI in the Canadian market.
