All Priorities Aside: The Canadian Government's Singular Response to COVID-19

Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides an overview of the actions the federal government is taking and the implications for IT spending in the sector. 2020 is not like any other year. Nearly everything that the Canadian government is doing, including its annual budget, is being dramatically reframed under the backdrop of the COVID-19 epidemic. Instead of anticipated announcements around childcare and middle-class programs, the government is directing over C$100 billion toward COVID-19 response. Rather than providing projections that typically go five years out, the government policies are being continuously rewritten.

"The pandemic that began in China in early December 2019, slowly then rippling through Asia, and finally spreading in every direction across the globe, has changed the Canadian government's spending plans, priorities, and actions," says Mark Schrutt, strategic advisor, Public Sector and Innovation research at IDC Canada.
