Abstract

This IDC Survey provides perspectives on enterprise attitudes, needs, and adoption of IoT from IDC's 2022 North American Enterprise 5G, IoT, and Private Mobile Networks Survey, and from IDC Canada's IT Advisory Panel Survey, December 2022.

High-level findings include:

  • IT and technology teams as well as executives are making decisions on IoT strategy with most businesses in Canada deploying or having deployed IoT projects.
  • Mobility plays a significant role in the deployment of IoT despite connectivity cost and network latency challenges, in addition to general IoT implementation challenges of lack of IT skills, security and data management concerns, and costs.
  • Initially IoT implementations focused on data collection and remote asset/sensor monitoring; more recently, the focus is evolving to include more attention on remote asset/sensor management and predictive management.
  • The analytical approach to IoT is also evolving from determining that something has happened and why it happened to predicting when something will happen and determining the next best action to take, although small businesses are slower to evolve in their use of analytics for IoT.
