SAP DBS: Can Enterprise Software Support and Services Really be Transformational?

By: Douglas HaywardAssociate Vice President, Elaina StergiadesResearch Manager, Software and Hardware Support Services, Gard LittleResearch Director, Global Services Markets and Trends

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective summarizes learnings from the SAP Digital Business Services (SAP DBS) analyst day in New York in July 2017. The document looks at the experiences of two SAP customers attending the event, and discusses the implications of three recent SAP DBS initiatives: the launch of the Leonardo Innovation Services, the new SAP Preferred Success and SAP MaxAttention Success offerings, and SAP's decision to refocus its services operation on more strategic interaction with customers and to downgrade its focus on project-based technology implementation services.

"SAP is right to give as much space as possible in the consulting and IT services market to its ecosystem partners. It needs these partners and will almost certainly need them more in the coming years, as clients transition to cloud-based services," said Douglas Hayward, an IDC research associate vice president based in London. "For SAP's strategic Leonardo Innovation Services initiative to be successful, the company will need to get its tier 1 consulting and implementation partners fully engaged and committed to the program. For SAP, the services ecosystem is a critical success driver of the future."
