EU Roaming Reform, One Year On: Lessons for Carriers

By: Dusanka RadonicicSenior Research Analyst, Telecoms & Networking, Rosie SecchiResearch Manager, European Wireless and Mobile Communications

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective addresses the impact of the "Roam Like at Home" (RLAH) regulation by the European Commission (EC) on mobile communication stakeholders a year after it came to action. It focuses on the main outcomes of implementing RLAH and their implications for telecoms providers. It also offers some guidance to stakeholders based on assumptions for future scenarios.

"Since the RLAH came in force in June 2017, many European mobile users have enjoyed lower-cost, high-quality connectivity across the EU," said Rosie Secchi, research manager, IDC European Enterprise Mobility. "Mobile data spending is expected to increase during the next five years due to more advanced data capabilities and engagement with content, as well as services dependent on high-speed data connectivity. This could also boost roaming traffic more, as long as operators are able to monetize data roaming as much as they can."
