IDC PlanScape: European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Compliance for Utilities

By: Phevos SkalidisResearch Manager, Silvia PiaiSenior Research Manager, EMEA

Abstract

This IDC PlanScape provides insights into the adoption of the GDPR for utilities to help them define a compliant information management strategy, addressing the indispensable legal obligations to be satisfied a couple of months before the coming into force.

The GDPR challenges the fundamentals of how personal data have been treated so far. It could potentially usher in multiple privacy demands that utilities have never faced before. Implications are so far-reaching that virtually every business aspect entailing the process of personal data will be affected. Given the need for a paradigm shift, it remains to be seen to what extent utilities will be compliant with the GDPR. Responding to a recent IDC questionnaire, 61% of European utilities executives admitted being either partially compliant or largely non-compliant.
