Abstract

This IDC Perspective assesses the impact of the Oracle Autonomous Database on the role of the database administrator. Emerging technologies can redefine established technology environments and help IT departments with their day-to-day jobs. We believe that this process will be critical to ensure the longer-term relevance of these IT departments in the context of the market disruption that all organizations have to deal with. The Oracle Autonomous Database was announced at Oracle OpenWorld in October 2017 and uses advanced AI and machine learning to automate certain elements of database management. Some DBAs might see self-managing (or autonomous) databases as a threat to their jobs. But the point is that these technologies don't need to replace jobs or activities; they can augment existing tasks to help IT roles focus on higher value-added activities.

"All roles within the IT function will need to evolve over the next few years as new technologies are adopted in an accelerated fashion. The Oracle Autonomous Database is a good example of how AI could affect the role of the database administrator (DBA)," said Philip Carter. "We believe that this type of technology can automate time-consuming manual tasks such as tuning, updating patches, and systems management that defined the role of the DBA in the past. Instead, the future DBA can focus on the emerging DevOps space and help developers and operations teams in a more strategic fashion in areas such as data integration, data modeling, data life-cycle management, and risk management."
