European Communications Service Provider Capex Forecast, 2019-2023

By: Bruno TeytonResearch Director, EMEA Telecommunications and Networking

Abstract

This IDC Market Forecast and the associated database (Telecom Operating Model or TOM) examine the development of the capex of this subset of telecom operators in the historical period 2017-2018, with a forecast of CSP capex in 2019-2023 and a split by capex categories.

"Telecom operators in Europe will decrease their investments at 1% CAGR over the 2018-2023 and improve their investment efficiency, with 15% (or mid-teens) becoming the new normal in the telecom industry. With this budget development, telecom operators need to upgrade fixed networks, prepare the rollout of 5G and transform their OSS and BSS layers to digitalize their relationships with customers and generate new revenue streams," said Bruno Teyton, senior research director, Europe Telco 2025. "These strategies have a profound impact on the allocation of investments by category. Over the forecast period, the weight of base transceiver station (BTS) and mobile control, routers and switches, OSS and BSS, CPEs, transport, and security will increase. On the contrary, the weights of datacenters, towers and other facilities, and other categories will drop."
