This IDC Perspective explores the ways in which today's world of IT abundance influences and challenges organization's abilities to digitally transform. As well as making the promise of digital transformation widely achievable, today's world of technology abundance has also created a perfect storm of challenges. New competitors are setting industry agendas and putting pressure on established businesses to transform; new platforms create complexity; talent is hard to find, and new talent is increasingly calling the shots regarding transformation tools and approaches; and many existing enterprise IT leaders are having to re-educate themselves while demand for application delivery grows.
"In the developed economies of European countries at least, businesses and individuals today live in a world of technology abundance. Naturally, it's clear that without such technology abundance, digital transformation would not be a mainstream concept — it would be the preserve of only the largest, most well-capitalized businesses," said Neil Ward-Dutton, VP of AI and DX Practices, IDC Europe. "However, technology abundance influences the world of digital transformation far beyond its simple enablement role — and the potential impacts of this influence are not wholly positive. Technology abundance also creates some very significant challenges for organizations."
