This IDC Market Presentation is the inaugural edition of the IDC European Cloud Marketplace Directory. The document contains profiles of a selection of cloud marketplaces, focusing on their relevance to the IT partner community from a European perspective. In total, the directory comprises 14 profiles of cloud marketplaces, with details regarding key statistics, core purpose, key features, and benefits.
The directory also lays out what IDC considers to be key characteristics of a "cloud marketplace" along with a typology to segment the emerging cloud marketplace landscape based on operator type and core purpose.
IDC is aware that the directory is not exhaustive and doesn't cover the full list of cloud marketplaces. New marketplaces will be added to this directory in future iterations.
Cloud marketplaces have emerged as a new route to market for cloud-enabled solutions. IDC sees this trend gaining momentum given the growing impact of digital natives as a new breed of IT buyer, the rise of cloud-native architectures, and a push toward disaggregating monolithic applications in favor of greater modularity and extensibility. Independent software vendors (ISVs) increasingly gravitate toward and rely on cloud marketplaces to effectively reach their customers while traditional channel partners and distributors are challenged to define their own marketplace strategy to avoid being disintermediated.
Content in this presentation forms part of IDC's perspective on the evolution of the channel toward digital ecosystems and the rise of new routes to market in the age of cloud and digital transformation.
