This IDC PeerScape examines the practices addressing the implementation and leveraging of digital twin technology in a manufacturing environment for various purposes, such as production-line performance improvement, new services development, or information-sharing capabilities between customer and service provider.
"The digital twin can have many forms, so there is a different understanding of what a digital twin is and what it is not. We can see the shift from the traditional 3D model form being utilized mostly by R&D to complex, real-time, and data-based models of production lines, facilities, and even whole ecosystems. It's amazing to watch how fast the digital twin technology is emerging, thus providing significant value to its users. We hope these practices will inspire manufacturers to examine and develop their digital twins to improve quality, reduce costs, and increase the availability of the machines," said Jan Burian, research director, IDC Manufacturing Insights EMEA.
