This IDC Survey Spotlight analyzes how retailers are executing innovation pilots in the context of a broader business model innovation process. It explains why retailers must pay close attention to capitalizing at an optimal level the resource investments on innovation discovery and selection, and to building assets that can be leveraged companywide with agility. It leverages data from IDC's 2020 Global Retail Innovation Survey, in which we posed 11 maturity questions to understand the status of retailers' overall approach to innovation. We asked retailers to provide a self-assessment for topics such as innovation strategies, co-innovation activities, retail commerce platform implementation, use of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities, innovation piloting, and innovation implementation and scaling. The survey includes a total of 25 questions.
