Abstract

This IDC Market Note examines Microsoft's initial progress toward its goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030, a year after it was announced. By linking executive pay to the achievement of its "moonshot goals," the IT vendor hopes to encourage ownership and adoption of these goals to accelerate their achievement.

"Microsoft announced its progress on its ambitious 'moonshot goals' that it shared exactly a year ago. The company is on track to achieve those ambitious goals, but perhaps more remarkable is its broad understanding of the climate crisis and how it will pull different strings to accelerate change across its own organization and beyond," said Marta Muñoz, IDC European Technology for Sustainability Practice Lead.
