Capex Trends for the Top 10 European Telcos: Entering a New Investment Cycle in a Post-COVID-19 Era

By: Bruno TeytonResearch Director, EMEA Telecommunications and Networking

On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Market Presentation summarizes significant capex trends that will affect the top 10 telcos in Europe in the short term and midterm. IDC forecasts that they will increase capex by 1.3% year over year until 2025. Their capex intensity will decrease to 17.4% by 2025. After the COVID-19 crisis, we expect a rebound between 2021 and 2023. Some telcos such as BT and Vodafone have stated they need additional investments to capture growth opportunities. New wholesale models and the creation of infrastructure companies to manage towers of fiber-optic networks create new opportunities to raise capital in equity markets or to attract new investors. However, telcos will continue optimizing their infrastructure and processes to generate new savings. They will need the help of vendors to deploy cloud-native architectures and leverage cloud hyperscalers' infrastructures and solutions.
