What Are the Key Challenges Affecting Software Development/Delivery?

By: George MironescuSenior Research Manager, Accelerated Application Delivery & European Cloud Platforms

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight provides insight into the primary challenges affecting software development/delivery teams among organizations in Europe. The document provides a detailed view of core challenges as indicated by respondents differentiated by organization size.

This document contains data from IDC's EMEA Accelerated App Delivery Survey that was conducted between July and August 2021 using a computer-aided telephone interview (CATI) method. The purpose of the EMEA Accelerated App Delivery Survey is to explore topics related to application and software development/delivery, including budgetary spend intentions, cloud native, DevOps, GitOps, DevSecOps, observability, open source, software development, and developer sourcing strategies. The survey solicited replies from a mix of over 400 IT, DevOps, and app dev/delivery leaders across 11 European countries (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K.).

"Integration into legacy environments, the placement and organizational design of app delivery teams within the wider business, access to and flow of data through various organizational pipelines, and the widening gap between new and old systems are big problems that mar app delivery. The larger the organization, the more complex it is to navigate these. Understanding these challenges at a deeper level and addressing them should be on the agenda of any organization that seeks to increase software/digital competitiveness," said George Mironescu, senior research manager, Accelerated App Delivery Europe.
