Abstract

This IDC Perspective analyzes volunteering in Germany and Europe, based on a survey conducted by IDC, WHU and IDG in Germany. Volunteering may seem like decisions entirely made by individuals, but IDC's survey of volunteering in Germany finds that individual, enterprise, and society benefits greatly from volunteering, and that employers can facilitate volunteering while building its attraction to core parts of the workforce.

Volunteering should become an integral part of building a sense of purpose among employees and improving employee experience. Throughout Europe, organizations need to address the shortage of skills in specialist areas, improve on their ability to meet employees' needs, and build brand attractiveness.

"The ability to incorporate volunteering schemes into the work culture will not only become a differentiating factor for organizations, but it will also improve diversity and collaboration with employees and society. Moreover, society will need contributions from enterprises in improving the ratio of digital skills within Europe," said Martin Sundblad, research manager and head of IDC's European Skills Practice.
