What Are the Most Important Skills for Cybersecurity Professionals in Europe?
This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights the different skills important to cybersecurity professionals in Europe. According to wave 6 of IDC's Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending Survey (July 2022), security training will receive the highest funding increase from European organizations as they modify their cyber readiness and defenses. However, this does not necessarily mean a focus only on security technology and processes. Cybersecurity professionals need broader skill sets to support the movement from technical security to more holistic end-to-end security, where security is part technology, part process, and part risk management.
IDC's 2022 Global IT Skills Survey examined the importance of 80 different skill categories to 40 general IT roles in seven role groups. It included responses from 227 cybersecurity staff and managers in Europe, through which we discovered what skills and capabilities cybersecurity professionals consider important to their careers and where they need training. We have also examined how the top 10 skills have changed since our Global IT Skills Survey in 2021.
"It is evident that well-skilled IT professionals, including cybersecurity professionals, are critical for their organizations' digital business transformation efforts. However, many IT organizations are struggling with identifying which skills are important and how to develop them. This is an area in which IT training providers can help their customers — and an area in which tech providers need to take a keen interest to support technology adoption. In addition, creating meaningful career opportunities for IT professionals is crucial for attracting and retaining talent in a highly competitive skills market," said Marianne Kolding, vice president, European Skills research at IDC Europe.
