Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights the different skills important to software development professionals in Europe. According to IDC's 2022 European DevOps and SW Innovation Survey, managing technical debt is the number 1 challenge for software developers (including the respective management layer). Technical debt containment and planning in the context of transitioning to cloud require software developers to sharpen and upgrade their skills.

IDC's 2022 Global IT Skills Survey examined the importance of 80 different skill categories to 40 general IT roles in seven role groups. It included responses from 238 software development staff and managers in Europe, where we discovered what skills and capabilities software development professionals consider important to their careers and where they need training. This document also examines how the top 10 skills have changed since our Global IT Skills Survey in 2021.

"It is evident that well-skilled IT professionals are critical for their organizations' digital business transformation efforts, and software development professionals play a pivotal role. However, many IT organizations are struggling with identifying which skills are important and developing them. This is an area in which IT training providers can help their customers — and an area in which tech providers need to take a keen interest to support technology adoption.
