Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight compares the business benefits organizations expect to achieve after migrating to public cloud with what they actually achieved.

Organizations that took part in IDC's European Multicloud Surveys conducted in August and September 2022 were IT/IS managers or above who were knowledgeable about cloud. Respondents were from 16 European markets and from various industry sectors and company sizes that currently use, or are considering the use of, any type of cloud.

The results show that from an overall perspective, migrating to public cloud is meeting — even exceeding, in many cases — all business expectations. This can be particularly seen in the infrastructure sector, where generally low initial expectations across the board were exceeded when it comes to what is actually achieved.

The converse is true of the public sector. Here, there are high expectations of what business benefits can be achieved with a public cloud migration, but many of these are not fully realized.

In all cases, there are opportunities for service providers. Organizations that are not achieving their expectations may need greater support and help in meeting their aims. Those that are exceeding their expectations should now focus on maintaining momentum and will seek the enhanced expertise needed to continue executing on their strategies.
