Abstract

This IDC Survey analyzes European telecommunications operators' priorities and plans from the 2022 European Telco Networking and Operations Survey. Between May and June 2022, IDC Europe conducted a telephone survey of 120 telecommunications operators in Europe. It covered OSS, BSS, and monetization topics, as well as networking strategies. In networking, key themes include priorities over the next two years, main concerns, network slicing, vRAN, SDN, network virtualization/cloudification, strategic partners, and the role of managed services providers.

With skyrocketing energy bills, energy reduction is the top priority at 31%. Telecommunications operators need to implement smart energy consumption to manage, optimize, and decrease energy consumption, especially in wireless networks. Telecom networks need to shift to platforms that enable new use cases and business models. Simplification, decommissioning of legacy technologies, network cloudification, software-defined networking (SDN), and network disaggregation will play prominent roles.
