Verizon and AOL, AT&T and DirecTV, Charter and Time Warner Cable plus Bright House Networks. A steady cadence of strategic acquisitions by traditional communication service providers (CSPs) continues, and may include Yahoo! by the time this IDC Web conference airs. But what are the endgame strategies behind this activity? How common are the objectives, what are the critical assets, and who wins or loses in the burgeoning battle for content and services between CSPs and Internet/OTT giants?

IDC's connected platforms lead John Jackson moderates this interactive discussion featuring lead analysts for broadband and media Matt Davis and Greg Ireland, who will provide a deal-by-deal analysis of the reshaping of the U.S. consumer telecom and media landscape, with implications and recommendations for CSPs, Internet and OTT players, infrastructure providers, ad networks, traditional media companies and beyond.

Questions to be addressed in the panel-style session include the following:

  • What do today's deals tell us about the future value of access versus service models?
  • How competitive can (mobile and/or wireline) CSPs be beyond access?
  • What are the growth engines for CSPs going forward?
  • Where do content ownership and technology platform ownership fit in?
  • What are the implications of regulation and restrictions put on as part of deal approvals?
  • How will consumer "wallet share" change between now and 2020?

Session Speakers:

  • Matt Davis, Program Director, Consumer Multiplay Services
  • Greg Ireland, Research Director, Multiscreen Video
  • John Jackson, Research Vice President, Mobile & Connected Platforms
