Information technology (IT) organizations have traditionally controlled the methods for the creation and distribution of data from their back-end systems to their end users. Through a functionally closed system where IT controlled the devices and the software, they were able to fend off competition from outside forces and ensure the continuity of data, infrastructure and security.

That was until mobile arrived. Now the CIO faces the infiltration of devices and a proliferation of third-party apps across the network, often times with little or no security or oversight attached. With mobile, IT faces opposition from within by marketing and business units that now have new weapons at their disposal with their third party developers that are ready to deliver custom, end-user friendly applications in record time.

As the pendulum shifts away from IT control, organizations must open themselves up to the opportunities mobility has to offer: organizations must fundamentally change their traditional development and distribution practices creating a mobility strategy that allows IT to be an innovator, not just a survivor.
